Q. What is an admin fee and do I get it back at the end of my lease?

A. An admin fee is a small, one-time fee (usually about $10-15) which clients pay at the beginning of their lease to cover the cost of paperwork and preparing a unit. If the facility offers 24-hour access, the admin fee also pays for the security code needed for tenants to enter. An admin fee is typically not refunded.

Q. Is a moving truck available on moving day?

A. Many facilities offer moving trucks to their customers, but remember: the facility has a limited amount of trucks available and many tenants will be wanting access to them. If you call, you can ask if and when a truck will be available and schedule your moving day at a time that works for both of you.

Q. Does the facility have 24-hour access?

A. Although it is a popular storage feature, not every self storage facility offers 24-hour access. If you’ll need access to your storage unit 24/7, check the facility’s website or call ahead of time to verify that they offer this amenity.

Q. What is stairs/ladders access?

A. Stairs access is a method for accessing locker units and units with 4-foot ceilings. These units are typically stacked on top of each other. You can roll the stairs/ladders so you can climb up to your unit.

Q. What is the average temperature range of a climate-controlled storage unit?

A. 55-85 degrees Fahrenheit.

Q. Do I have to sign up for an extended lease?

A. No, most storage facilities feature monthly lease terms. Some even allow weekly terms.

Q. How tall are the units?

A. In general, a self storage unit is 8 feet high, but some smaller ones feature a 4-foot-high ceiling.

Q. Will the facility accept deliveries?

A. Some self storage facilities are willing to accept inbound deliveries for their tenants. This is particularly useful for commercial clients, as they can have their deliveries sent to their units and signed for by the facility staff. Contact your self storage facility to see if they offer this service.

Q. Does the facility pro-rate?

A. Each facility has its own policy regarding pro-rating (determining your rental fee if you move in during the middle of the month after the lease’s first rental term has already begun).
